Brief review
In the previous lesson, we looked at short instructions and warnings on appliances: advarsel, forsiktig, maksimal belastning, kun til innendørs bruk, ikke dekk til, la avkjøles, før bruk, etter bruk. The grammatical support was the imperative and prohibition with ikke. This material is included here only as background: when choosing appliances, it is important not only to compare models, but also to understand the conditions for safe use.
Lesson topic
The topic of the lesson is discussing the choice of household appliances in a real everyday situation: at home, in a store, when comparing models online. The task is not to name the appliance, but to justify the choice according to several criteria.
In this lesson, the main focus is on the vocabulary of comparison and evaluation: prisnivå, kvalitet, funksjonalitet, holdbarhet, merke, modell, å sammenligne, å passe behovene. These words make it possible to talk not about the item in general, but about why one version is better than another.
For the B1 level, phrases like “I like it” are not enough. Arguments are needed: the price is too high, the quality seems higher, the model suits the needs, the functions justify the cost. Therefore, the examples use reason, comparison, condition, and conclusion.
Usage boundaries are important. merke is a brand, while modell is a specific model within a brand. kvalitet describes overall quality, while funksjonalitet refers to the set and usefulness of functions. holdbarhet is appropriate when talking about service life and reliability, not just external impression.
The expression å passe behovene is used when the choice is related to a specific situation: family size, frequency of use, space in the kitchen, budget. It sounds natural in argumentation because it shifts the conversation from a general opinion to a practical criterion.
Lesson goal
- The student will be able to discuss criteria for choosing household appliances.
- The student will be able to explain why one model is more suitable than another.
Examples with analysis
- Vi sammenligner flere modeller. — We are comparing several models.. Appropriate at the beginning of a discussion, when the decision has not yet been made and the options are being compared.. The present tense is used because this is about the current process of choosing. Flere modeller clarifies that the comparison is not between brands in general, but between specific options.
- Denne passer behovene våre best. — This one suits our needs best.. Used when, after comparing, it is necessary to name the most suitable option.. Denne points to a specific model. Best is the superlative form because the choice is made among several options. Behovene våre makes the argument practical rather than subjective.
- Kvaliteten virker høyere enn forventet. — The quality seems higher than expected.. Suitable for a cautious positive assessment when the conclusion is based on impression, description, or inspection.. The verb virker indicates an impression, not a proven fact. The comparison enn forventet sets a norm of expectation and makes the assessment more precise.
- Prisnivået er litt for høyt. — The price level is a little too high.. Used when the product is generally suitable, but the price goes beyond the desired limit.. Litt softens the assessment, and for høyt shows that the acceptable level is exceeded. This wording sounds natural in a polite discussion of a purchase.
- Vi sammenligner flere modeller, fordi vi ikke bare ser på pris, men også på kvalitet og holdbarhet. — We are comparing several models because we are looking not only at price, but also at quality and durability.
New vocabulary: å sammenligne, modell, kvalitet, holdbarhet.
Grammar: Cause connector with fordi; familiar structure for comparing criteria..
The phrase is built as an argument: first the action, then the reason. Ikke bare ... men også ... naturally shows that the choice is based on several criteria, not just one. - Denne modellen er dyrere, men funksjonaliteten er bedre, så den kan passe behovene våre likevel. — This model is more expensive, but the functionality is better, so it may still suit our needs.
New vocabulary: modell, funksjonalitet, å passe behovene.
Grammar: Contrast with men and conclusion with så; modal verb kan..
What matters here is the balance of arguments: a high price does not rule out the choice if the functions are more useful. Likevel shows that the conclusion is made despite the first objection about the price. - Prisnivået er litt for høyt for oss nå, hvis vi også må kjøpe ekstra utstyr. — The price level is a little too high for us now if we also have to buy extra equipment.
New vocabulary: prisnivå.
Grammar: Condition with hvis; modal verb må..
The phrase does not simply assess the price, but links it to a condition. This is natural in an everyday discussion of a budget: the price is considered together with related expenses. - Jeg kjenner dette merket godt, men jeg er usikker på om denne modellen har samme kvalitet som de eldre variantene. — I know this brand well, but I am not sure whether this model has the same quality as the older versions.
New vocabulary: merke, modell, kvalitet.
Grammar: Contrast with men; subordinate clause with om..
Merke and modell are separated by meaning: trust in a brand does not mean automatic trust in every model. Therefore, after the general positive background, there is clarification and doubt. - Kvaliteten virker høyere enn forventet, selv om prisnivået fortsatt er ganske høyt. — The quality seems higher than expected, although the price level is still quite high.
New vocabulary: kvalitet, prisnivå.
Grammar: Concession with selv om; comparative construction enn forventet..
The phrase shows typical B1 argumentation: a positive assessment and a limitation in one statement. Virker preserves caution: the speaker is evaluating based on impression, not on long-term experience. - Hvis holdbarheten er god, lønner det seg å betale litt mer for modellen. — If the durability is good, it is worth paying a little more for the model.
New vocabulary: holdbarhet, modell.
Grammar: Condition with hvis; familiar infinitive construction lønner det seg å..
Here the choice is explained through long-term benefit. Holdbarhet makes the argument rational: a higher price is justified by the service life. - For en liten leilighet passer denne modellen behovene bedre, fordi den tar mindre plass og har nok funksjonalitet til daglig bruk. — For a small apartment, this model suits the needs better because it takes up less space and has enough functionality for daily use.
New vocabulary: modell, å passe behovene, funksjonalitet.
Grammar: Comparison with bedre; cause with fordi..
The phrase links the choice to a specific context of use. Behovene are not abstract: they are determined by space and frequency of use. - Vi bør sammenligne denne modellen med en billigere modell fra et annet merke før vi bestemmer oss. — We should compare this model with a cheaper model from another brand before we decide.
New vocabulary: å sammenligne, modell, merke.
Grammar: Modal verb bør; time connector før..
The phrase expresses a recommendation, not a command. The repetition of modell is justified: two specific products are being compared, while merke only specifies the manufacturer of the second option. - Funksjonaliteten ser bra ut på papiret, men hvis vi ikke kommer til å bruke funksjonene, er den ikke så relevant. — The functionality looks good on paper, but if we are not going to use the functions, it is not that relevant.
New vocabulary: funksjonalitet.
Grammar: Contrast with men; condition with hvis..
This is an important limitation in the use of the vocabulary of choice: many functions do not always mean a better choice. The assessment is built on real use, not on a list of possibilities. - Denne passer behovene våre best, derfor velger vi den modellen selv om den ikke er billigst. — This one suits our needs best, therefore we choose that model even though it is not the cheapest.
New vocabulary: å passe behovene, modell.
Grammar: Conclusion with derfor; concession with selv om; superlative best..
The phrase completes the comparison and formulates the decision. Best shows the final result after several criteria, and selv om emphasizes that price was not the only factor.

Study text
