Brief review
In the previous lesson, we looked at typical household appliance malfunctions: "feil", "svikt", "lekkasje", "overoppheting", "stopp", "kortslutning", as well as patterns for describing symptoms, for example "å slutte å virke" and "å lage en merkelig lyd". The grammar support was minimal: the main focus was on naming the breakdown and briefly describing the condition of the appliance.
Lesson topic
The topic of this lesson is cause-and-effect connectors in descriptions of breakdowns. It is not enough to name the malfunction; at the B1 level, you need to explain why it occurred and what it led to.
For cause, this lesson uses three main patterns: "på grunn av", "årsaken er" and "som følge av". The first usually introduces the cause as a circumstance, the second names the cause directly, and the third more often introduces the consequence and sounds more formal.
For consequence, the main connector is "derfor". It does not attach to a noun, but links two statements: first the cause, then the conclusion or result.
The practical situation in this lesson: you explain why an appliance stopped working, why it was necessary to disconnect the power, and why a problem occurred after moisture, overload, or poor contact.
It is important to distinguish the direction of the connection. "på grunn av overbelastning" answers the question of what caused the breakdown. "derfor" answers the question of what happened as a result of the already named cause. "som følge av feilen" introduces the consequence as the result of the malfunction and is usually used in a more neutral or written style.
The new vocabulary in this lesson is limited to words and expressions for cause-and-effect relationships and typical causes of breakdowns: "på grunn av", "derfor", "som følge av", "årsaken er", "konsekvens", "fuktighet", "overbelastning", "dårlig kontakt". They need to be used accurately, because a mistake here changes the logic of the statement.
Lesson goal
- The student will be able to explain the cause of a malfunction.
- The student will be able to connect a breakdown with its consequence in one statement.
Examples with analysis
- Maskinen stoppet på grunn av overbelastning. — The machine stopped because of overload.. When you need to briefly and directly name the cause of the appliance stopping.. Here, "på grunn av" + the noun "overbelastning" is used. This is the standard pattern for indicating cause without a separate subordinate clause.
- Det var dårlig kontakt, derfor virket den ikke. — There was poor contact, so it did not work.. When the cause is stated first and then its result.. The first part names the problem, the second the consequence. After "derfor", the verb "virket" comes before the subject "den", because this adverb occupies the first position in the second part of the statement.
- Årsaken er trolig fuktighet. — The cause is probably moisture.. When the cause is not fully proven, but is formulated as a probable explanation.. The pattern "årsaken er" directly names the cause. The adverb "trolig" shows caution in the conclusion.
- Som følge av feilen måtte vi slå av strømmen. — As a result of the malfunction, we had to turn off the power.. When you need to describe the consequence of a malfunction in a more neutral or formal style.. The construction "som følge av" introduces the basis for the action. The main message here is the forced action "måtte vi slå av strømmen" as a result of the malfunction.
- Maskinen stoppet på grunn av overbelastning. — The machine stopped because of overload.
New vocabulary: på grunn av, overbelastning.
Grammar: "på grunn av" to indicate cause.
The cause is expressed through a noun, so "derfor" is not used, but "på grunn av". The phrase is short and neutral. - Det var dårlig kontakt, derfor virket lampen ikke. — There was poor contact, so the lamp did not work.
New vocabulary: dårlig kontakt, derfor.
Grammar: "derfor" as a consequence connector with inverted word order.
First the cause is named, then the consequence. After "derfor", the verb "virket" comes before the subject "lampen". - Årsaken er trolig fuktighet, fordi apparatet sto i et fuktig rom. — The cause is probably moisture, because the appliance was in a damp room.
New vocabulary: årsaken er, fuktighet.
Grammar: "årsaken er" for naming the cause.
The first part formulates the conclusion, the second justifies it. "trolig" shows that this is not an absolute fact, but a probable explanation. - Som følge av feilen måtte vi slå av strømmen, selv om vi først håpet at problemet skulle forsvinne av seg selv. — As a result of the malfunction, we had to turn off the power, although at first we hoped that the problem would disappear by itself.
New vocabulary: som følge av.
Grammar: "som følge av" for formally indicating the basis of a result.
The main meaning is the consequence of the malfunction. The construction is chosen because the point is not simply the cause, but the forced result. - Det oppsto en alvorlig konsekvens etter feilen: kjøleskapet slo seg av, og maten måtte brukes samme dag. — A serious consequence arose after the malfunction: the refrigerator turned off, and the food had to be used the same day.
New vocabulary: konsekvens.
Here, "konsekvens" names the result as a separate fact. The colon introduces a specification of this consequence. - På grunn av dårlig kontakt slo apparatet seg av flere ganger når vi prøvde å bruke det. — Because of poor contact, the appliance turned off several times when we tried to use it.
New vocabulary: på grunn av, dårlig kontakt.
Grammar: "på grunn av" for cause.
The cause is presented as a circumstance at the beginning of the sentence. This is natural when the speaker wants to indicate the source of the problem right away. - Det var høy fuktighet på badet, derfor fungerte laderen dårlig den kvelden. — There was high humidity in the bathroom, so the charger worked poorly that evening.
New vocabulary: fuktighet, derfor.
Grammar: "derfor" for drawing a consequence.
The first part sets the condition-cause, the second reports the observed result. "derfor" logically links them. - Årsaken er ikke alltid overbelastning; noen ganger er det bare dårlig kontakt. — The cause is not always overload; sometimes it is just poor contact.
New vocabulary: årsaken er, overbelastning, dårlig kontakt.
Grammar: "årsaken er" for contrasting possible causes.
Here the pattern is used to distinguish between two possible causes. The semicolon helps separate the contrast. - Som følge av overbelastning ble systemet ustabilt, men etter en pause virket det igjen. — As a result of overload, the system became unstable, but after a pause it worked again.
New vocabulary: som følge av, overbelastning.
Grammar: "som følge av" for describing a result.
The construction introduces the cause of the change in condition. In the second part, a contrast with "men" is added, which is typical of connected B1 speech. - Hvis årsaken er fuktighet, bør vi ikke koble til apparatet igjen før alt er helt tørt. — If the cause is moisture, we should not connect the appliance again until everything is completely dry.
New vocabulary: årsaken er, fuktighet.
Grammar: "årsaken er" inside a conditional sentence.
Here the new pattern is built into a condition. This shows how the cause formula works not only in a separate statement, but also in an instruction for a situation.
New words and expressions
- på grunn av — because of, due to. An expression of cause before a noun or phrase. Suitable for briefly indicating the source of the problem. Maskinen stoppet på grunn av fuktighet. — The machine stopped because of moisture..
- derfor — therefore, so. An adverb of consequence. It links cause and result in two parts of a statement. Det var dårlig kontakt, derfor virket den ikke. — There was poor contact, so it did not work..
- som følge av — as a result of, as a consequence of. A more formal connector of cause or result. In the topic of breakdowns, it often introduces a consequence after a malfunction. Som følge av feilen måtte vi slå av strømmen. — As a result of the malfunction, we had to turn off the power..
- årsaken er — the reason is; the cause is. A pattern for directly naming the cause. Useful when you need to give a cautious explanation or assumption. Årsaken er trolig overbelastning. — The cause is probably overload..
- konsekvens — consequence. A noun for naming the result of a breakdown or a mistake in use. En konsekvens var at hele systemet stoppet. — One consequence was that the whole system stopped..
- fuktighet — humidity, moisture. A typical cause of malfunctions, especially if the contact or an internal part of the appliance got wet. Fuktighet kan føre til feil. — Moisture can lead to malfunctions..
- overbelastning — overload. A cause of an appliance stopping or shutting down under too high a load. Overbelastning førte til stopp. — Overload led to a stop..
- dårlig kontakt — poor contact. A typical cause when an appliance works unstably or does not turn on. Dårlig kontakt gjorde at lampen sluttet å virke. — Poor contact caused the lamp to stop working..
Grammar
Cause-and-effect connectors: "på grunn av", "derfor", "som følge av".
In this lesson, you need to distinguish three patterns. "på grunn av" is placed before a noun: "på grunn av overbelastning". After it, you do not place a full finite clause without restructuring. "derfor" is an adverb of consequence; it usually stands in the second part of the statement and causes inverted word order: "Det var dårlig kontakt, derfor virket den ikke". "som følge av" is close in function to "på grunn av", but is more often used in a more neutral, written, or explanatory style and sounds especially natural when describing consequences: "Som følge av feilen måtte vi slå av strømmen". The pattern "årsaken er" is needed when the speaker directly names the cause: "Årsaken er trolig fuktighet". It is useful if the cause is formulated as a conclusion rather than as a circumstance.
Rules and exceptions
- "på grunn av" is used before a noun or noun group: "på grunn av fuktighet", "på grunn av dårlig kontakt".
- "derfor" links cause and consequence between two parts of a statement. After "derfor", the verb usually comes before the subject if it does not open the main clause: "Derfor måtte vi slå av strømmen" or "..., derfor måtte vi slå av strømmen".
- "som følge av" usually combines with a noun and sounds more formal than "på grunn av". In the topic of breakdowns, it is especially natural when reporting the result of a malfunction.
- "årsaken er" is used when you need to name the cause as a conclusion or explanation: "Årsaken er trolig overbelastning".
- For logically precise speech, first choose what you want to name: the cause or the consequence. If you name the cause as a circumstance, use "på grunn av". If you derive the result, use "derfor". If you formulate a more official result, use "som følge av".
- Exception: "som følge av" is not always interchangeable with "på grunn av": in everyday spoken language, the former may sound too formal.
- Exception: After "på grunn av", you cannot place a finite clause unchanged such as "på grunn av den var våt"; you need a nominal form of the cause or another construction.
- Exception: "derfor" does not introduce a noun directly. You cannot build a pattern like "derfor fuktighet"; after it, you need a consequence as part of a sentence.
Study text
Vaskemaskinen stoppet midt i programmet i går kveld.
Questions for self-check
- Why, according to the text, can the problem with the washing machine not be explained by only one cause?
- How do "på grunn av" and "derfor" differ in function in speech?
- How would you explain in Norwegian that the appliance stopped working because of moisture and therefore you did not turn it on again?
