Brief review
In the previous lesson, the dishwasher was covered: the names of its parts and the user’s actions, for example loading, selecting a program, and unloading. The basic vocabulary included oppvaskmaskin, bestikkurv, øverste hylle, nedre kurv, oppvasktablett, skylleprogram, å fylle opp, å tømme. As support, modal verbs and everyday descriptions of how an appliance works are already familiar.
Lesson topic
The topic of the lesson is how to talk in Norwegian about cleaning the house with a vacuum cleaner and a robot vacuum. What is needed is not general household vocabulary, but precise words for the parts of the appliance, the user’s actions, and a typical malfunction.
At the center of the lesson are eight items: støvsuger, robotstøvsuger, munnstykke, filter, støvbeholder, å støvsuge, å tømme beholderen, å sette seg fast. With their help, the student describes what they clean with, which part of the appliance they use, what needs to be cleaned, and what problem has occurred.
This topic is practical: in everyday conversation, it is important to distinguish between the appliance itself, its container, filter, and attachment. If you speak imprecisely, the other person will not understand exactly what needs to be cleaned or why the appliance is working poorly.
At the B1 level, it is not enough to name an object. You need to be able to connect an action with its cause and consequence: first clean one room, then empty the container; the robot stops because it is stuck; the filter needs to be cleaned, otherwise the appliance loses suction. That is why the examples use causal and conditional links.
Lesson goal
- The student will be able to explain how they use cleaning equipment at home.
- The student will be able to describe a simple malfunction during cleaning.
Examples with analysis
- Robotstøvsugeren setter seg fast under sofaen. — The robot vacuum gets stuck under the sofa.. This is how people talk about a typical problem during automatic cleaning, when the appliance cannot continue moving.. The subject is Robotstøvsugeren. The compound predicate setter seg fast conveys precisely the state of being stuck, and under sofaen specifies the place. This is a natural everyday way to describe a malfunction without technical details.
- Filteret må rengjøres. — The filter needs to be cleaned.. This phrase is used when the cause of the appliance’s poor performance is related to a dirty filter.. The form må shows necessity. The passive infinitive form rengjøres is convenient because the focus is on the filter itself, not on the person performing the action.
- Jeg skal støvsuge stua først. — I’m going to vacuum the living room first.. This is how people talk about a cleaning plan and the order of actions.. Jeg skal støvsuge expresses a near intention. The word først is added at the end as a natural clarification of sequence: first this room, then the others.
- Støvbeholderen er allerede full. — The dust container is already full.. This phrase is needed when the appliance must be emptied before cleaning can continue.. The copula er + full describes the current state of the container. The adverb allerede shows that the container filled up earlier than expected.
- Jeg skal støvsuge stua først, fordi det ligger mest støv der. — I’m going to vacuum the living room first because there is the most dust there.
New vocabulary: å støvsuge.
Grammar: Cause link with fordi; plan with skal as familiar support..
The sentence is built from action to cause: first the cleaning plan is stated, then fordi explains the choice of room. This is natural for an everyday explanation of the order of actions. - Hvis støvbeholderen er full, må jeg tømme beholderen før jeg fortsetter. — If the dust container is full, I need to empty the container before I continue.
New vocabulary: støvbeholder, å tømme beholderen.
Grammar: Condition with hvis; necessity with må..
First the condition is given, then the required action. Repeating the container as beholderen is justified: the first word names the part of the appliance precisely, the second refers to the user’s action itself. - Robotstøvsugeren setter seg fast under sofaen når ledningen ligger på gulvet. — The robot vacuum gets stuck under the sofa when the cord is lying on the floor.
New vocabulary: robotstøvsuger, å sette seg fast.
Grammar: Time/condition link with når..
The main clause describes the problem, and the subordinate clause describes the typical situation in which it occurs. This makes the sentence sound like an observation from real life rather than an isolated statement. - Jeg bruker et annet munnstykke når jeg støvsuger trappa, fordi det vanlige er for stort. — I use a different attachment when I vacuum the stairs because the usual one is too big.
New vocabulary: munnstykke, å støvsuge.
Grammar: Links with når and fordi..
Here it is important to show the choice of attachment according to the situation. First the solution is named, then the place of use and the reason why the standard attachment is not suitable. - Filteret må rengjøres, ellers fungerer støvsugeren dårligere. — The filter needs to be cleaned, otherwise the vacuum cleaner works less effectively.
New vocabulary: filter, støvsuger.
Grammar: Necessity with må; consequence through ellers..
The first part states the necessary action, and the second gives the consequence if it is not done. This is the typical logic of a household instruction. - Støvbeholderen er allerede full, selv om jeg bare har støvsugd soverommet. — The dust container is already full even though I have only vacuumed the bedroom.
New vocabulary: støvbeholder, å støvsuge.
Grammar: Contrast with selv om..
The contrast is needed to show surprise: the amount of cleaning was small, but the container still filled up. That is why selv om is used. - Vi har både støvsuger og robotstøvsuger, men robotstøvsugeren tar ikke hjørnene like godt. — We have both a vacuum cleaner and a robot vacuum, but the robot vacuum does not clean the corners as well.
New vocabulary: støvsuger, robotstøvsuger.
Grammar: Contrast with men..
This example compares two appliances within one household system. The contrast is needed to show the robot’s limitation without a long technical explanation. - Når jeg er ferdig med å støvsuge, pleier jeg å tømme beholderen med en gang. — When I finish vacuuming, I usually empty the container right away.
New vocabulary: å støvsuge, å tømme beholderen.
Grammar: Time link with når..
The sentence describes a habitual order of actions after cleaning. The construction med en gang makes the instruction practical: the container is emptied immediately, not later. - Munnstykket sitter ikke godt, derfor blir det vanskelig å støvsuge under senga. — The attachment does not fit securely, so it becomes difficult to vacuum under the bed.
New vocabulary: munnstykke, å støvsuge.
Grammar: Consequence with derfor..
First the technical cause is named, then its practical consequence. This order helps explain the problem clearly to a user or a repair technician. - Jeg liker robotstøvsugeren fordi den kan støvsuge mens jeg lager middag, men jeg må sjekke om den har satt seg fast. — I like the robot vacuum because it can vacuum while I cook dinner, but I need to check whether it has got stuck.
New vocabulary: robotstøvsuger, å støvsuge, å sette seg fast.
Grammar: Cause with fordi; contrast with men; modal verb må as familiar support..
This is an extended everyday evaluation: first the advantage of the appliance, then its limitation. This structure is typical for B1 because it combines opinion, reason, and a practical problem.

Study text

- How would you explain in Norwegian that the robot vacuum got stuck and that the container needs to be emptied before continuing the cleaning?
