Brief review
In the previous lesson, we covered kjøleskap, fryser, temperatur, hyller, grønnsaksskuff, as well as the verbs å kjøle ned, å fryse, å tine. There was no new grammar topic. This material can be used as support for everyday descriptions of how appliances work, but not as new vocabulary.
Lesson topic
The topic of the lesson is describing washing and drying in an everyday situation: what exactly the user does, which mode they choose, and why. For this, you need the names of the appliance, the program, the cycle stage, and the laundry products.
In this topic, it is not enough just to name an object. You need to be able to explain the choice: what needs to be done, what is advisable to choose, and what is technically possible or impossible. That is why the modal verbs "må", "bør", "kan" are built into the lesson.
"må" expresses necessity: the action is required because of the situation or the result. "bør" expresses a recommendation: it is not a strict obligation, but a reasonable choice. "kan" expresses the possibility or ability of the appliance to perform an action.
The lesson vocabulary is limited to the process of washing and drying: "vaskemaskin", "tørketrommel", "vaskeprogram", "sentrifugering", "skyllemiddel", "vaskemiddel", "å sette på en vask", "å tørke klær". These words make it possible to describe the full cycle: start the wash, choose a program, add detergent, spin, and dry the clothes.
At the B1 level, it is important not only to name an action, but also to connect it with a reason, condition, or consequence: for example, why a short program is chosen, when the machine cannot spin, and what too much detergent leads to. That is why the examples use the connectors "fordi", "hvis", "når", "derfor", "likevel".
Lesson goal
- The student will be able to describe a washing and drying cycle.
- The student will be able to explain which mode is needed in a specific situation.
Examples with explanation
- Jeg må sette på en vask. — I need to start a wash.. Used when the washing needs to be started now or in the near future because of an everyday situation.. "må" expresses necessity, and "sette på en vask" is a fixed expression meaning to start a wash. After a modal verb, there is no "å".
- Du bør velge et kort program. — You should choose a short program.. Used as a recommendation, for example if there are few clothes or they are not very dirty.. "bør" softens the statement: it is advice, not an order. "velge" is in the infinitive without "å" after the modal verb.
- Maskinen kan ikke sentrifugere. — The machine cannot spin.. Used when describing a malfunction or a technical limitation.. Here, "kan" indicates the appliance’s ability to perform a function. The negation "ikke" comes after the modal verb.
- Vi bruker for mye vaskemiddel. — We use too much detergent.. Used when it is necessary to point out a user error or the reason for a poor washing result.. This is not a modal construction, but a simple statement about a habitual action. "for mye" shows an excessive amount.
- Jeg må sette på en vask før jeg går hjemmefra. — I need to start a wash before I leave home.
New vocabulary: å sette på en vask.
Grammar: må.
The modal verb is in second position and expresses necessity. The subordinate clause with "før" specifies the time frame, so the phrase sounds like real everyday planning rather than an isolated action. - Du bør velge et kort vaskeprogram hvis klærne bare er litt skitne. — You should choose a short washing program if the clothes are only slightly dirty.
New vocabulary: vaskeprogram.
Grammar: bør.
"bør" shows a recommendation, not an obligation. The condition with "hvis" explains in which situation the advice is appropriate. The word "vaskeprogram" makes it clear that what is being chosen is specifically a washing mode. - Maskinen kan ikke sentrifugere, så klærne er fortsatt veldig våte. — The machine cannot spin, so the clothes are still very wet.
New vocabulary: sentrifugering.
Grammar: kan.
Although the sentence uses the verb "sentrifugere", it is directly connected to the noun "sentrifugering" as the name of the function. The connector "så" introduces the consequence: because there is no spinning, the clothes remain wet. - Vi bruker for mye vaskemiddel, og derfor skyller maskinen dårligere enn vanlig. — We use too much detergent, and therefore the machine rinses worse than usual.
New vocabulary: vaskemiddel.
This is a cause-and-effect statement without a modal verb. "for mye" indicates excess, and "derfor" links the cause to the result. - Jeg bruker litt skyllemiddel når håndklærne skal lukte friskt. — I use a little fabric softener when the towels should smell fresh.
New vocabulary: skyllemiddel.
The subordinate clause with "når" shows a typical situation of use. The quantity is expressed by the word "litt", because in everyday life it is important not only to name the product, but also to show moderation. - Et langt vaskeprogram kan være nyttig, men du bør ikke velge det hver gang. — A long washing program can be useful, but you should not choose it every time.
New vocabulary: vaskeprogram.
Grammar: kan, bør.
In the first part, "kan" expresses possibility or appropriateness, and in the second, "bør ikke" gives a limiting recommendation. The contrast with "men" shows that the usefulness of the mode depends on the situation. - Når sentrifugeringen fungerer som den skal, tørker klærne raskere etterpå. — When the spin cycle works as it should, the clothes dry faster afterward.
New vocabulary: sentrifugering, å tørke klær.
The subordinate clause with "når" describes a regular relationship. The semantic focus is the connection between effective spinning and faster drying of clothes. - Jeg kan tørke klær i tørketrommelen i dag, men jeg bør vente til kvelden hvis maskinen er full nå. — I can dry clothes in the tumble dryer today, but I should wait until the evening if the machine is full now.
New vocabulary: å tørke klær, tørketrommel.
Grammar: kan, bør.
"kan" indicates the possibility of carrying out the action, while "bør" indicates a more reasonable decision under the circumstances. The condition with "hvis" makes the phrase natural for an everyday situation. - Tørketrommelen er praktisk, selv om jeg ikke bruker den etter hvert vaskeprogram. — The tumble dryer is practical, although I do not use it after every washing program.
New vocabulary: tørketrommel, vaskeprogram.
The construction with "selv om" introduces concession: the appliance is useful, but it is not used all the time. This is a typical B1 way to express a more precise attitude toward an object. - Hvis du må sette på en vask sent på kvelden, bør du velge et stille program hvis maskinen står nær soverommet. — If you need to start a wash late in the evening, you should choose a quiet program if the machine is near the bedroom.
New vocabulary: å sette på en vask, vaskemaskin.
Grammar: må, bør.
In one sentence, both necessity and recommendation are shown. The first part sets the situation, and the second gives practical advice. The repeated condition with "hvis" makes the statement precise and natural for everyday life.

Grammar
Modal verbs for choosing a mode and expressing everyday necessity: "må", "bør", "kan".
In this topic, modal verbs are needed not on their own, but for the practical choice of a mode and for describing everyday necessity. "må" shows that the action is required: without it, the situation is not resolved or the result will not be achieved. "bør" shows a recommendation: the speaker considers the option reasonable, but not absolutely necessary. "kan" shows possibility, ability, or the technical function of the appliance. After a modal verb in Norwegian, the infinitive is used without the particle "å": "må velge", "bør bruke", "kan ikke sentrifugere". In a regular declarative sentence, the modal verb is in second position: "Du bør velge et kort program." If there is negation, it usually comes after the modal verb: "kan ikke sentrifugere". This is especially important in everyday speech, because using "å" after a modal verb makes the phrase sound unnatural.
Rules and exceptions
- After "må", "bør", "kan", the next verb is used in the infinitive without "å": "må sette", "bør velge", "kan tørke".
- In an affirmative sentence, the modal verb takes the second position: "Jeg må sette på en vask.", "Du bør velge et kort program."
- "må" is used for necessity, "bør" for advice, and "kan" for possibility, ability, or the function of the appliance.
- In the negative form, the particle "ikke" usually comes after the modal verb: "Maskinen kan ikke sentrifugere."
- Exception: in everyday speech, "må" can convey both external necessity and practical inevitability; the boundary is not always formally expressed, but in the topic of appliances this is usually clear from the context.
- Exception: "kan" does not always mean permission; in this lesson it more often indicates the technical possibility of the appliance: "kan ikke sentrifugere" — not about prohibition, but about inability to perform the function.
Study text
Questions for self-check
- Why does the speaker in the text need to start the wash today, and what does the further drying of the clothes depend on?
- What is the difference in role within the topic between "vaskemiddel" and "skyllemiddel", and when is it appropriate to mention "sentrifugering"?
- How would you explain in Norwegian which mode should be chosen if there are few clothes, but they need to be dried quickly?
