Lesson 13 of 14

Devices, the Internet, and Digital Habits

The student learns to talk about technology, online communication, and digital safety.

Lesson goal

After the lesson, the student will be able to talk about devices, apps, the internet, and basic digital safety: describe technical problems, actions in apps and online, and also use frequent verb combinations with an object, for example with words about downloading, updating, and logging in.

Usage context

This topic is used in everyday digital life: when talking about a phone and a computer, when installing and updating apps, when connecting to the internet, when logging into an account, in messages about technical problems, and also in situations where it is necessary to talk about passwords, safety, and protection of personal data.

New vocabulary

Grammar

In a digital context, verbs with particles are often used: for example, laste ned, logge inn, slå av. It is important to remember them as a single combination because the particle changes the meaning of the verb. When there is an object, different positions are possible, but in everyday speech it is convenient to first remember the most frequent patterns.

  • Infinitive: the particle stands after the verb: laste ned, logge inn, slå av.

  • In the simple tense, the particle often remains after the object: Jeg laster ned appen. Han logger inn på kontoen.

  • If there is an object pronoun, it usually stands before the particle: Jeg laster den ned. Hun slo dem av.

  • Some combinations require a complement with a preposition: logge inn på en konto, koble til et nettverk.

  • Not all digital verbs have a particle: oppdatere appen — without a particle, so it should not be built according to the model of laste ned.

Examples with explanation

  1. Jeg må oppdatere appen før jeg kan bruke den. — I need to update the app before I can use it. Here oppdatere is a regular verb with the direct object appen, without a particle.

  2. Kan du laste ned filen for meg? — Can you download the file for me? In the infinitive, the combination functions as a single whole: laste ned filen.

  3. Jeg lastet ned appen i går kveld. — I downloaded the app yesterday evening. In the past tense, the object appen stands before the particle ned, which is very typical.

  4. Jeg lastet den ned med en gang. — I downloaded it right away. With the pronoun den, it stands before the particle ned.

  5. Hun klarer ikke å logge inn på kontoen sin. — She cannot log into her account. After logge inn, the preposition på is needed when talking about an account or service.

  6. Kan jeg logge inn på nettet her? — Can I log into the internet service here? The same model with logge inn på, but in a more general context.

  7. Vi må slå av varslingene når vi jobber. — We need to turn off the notifications when we work. The combination slå av is often used with varslinger, lyd, skjerm.

  8. Jeg slo dem av fordi de forstyrret meg. — I turned them off because they disturbed me. The pronoun dem stands before the particle av.

  9. Han koblet mobilen til nettverket hjemme. — He connected the phone to the network at home. Here the combination koble til is used with the object mobilen and the complement til nettverket.

  10. Det er lurt å bytte passordet regelmessig. — It is smart to change the password regularly. The verb bytte is often combined with passordet and is useful in the topic of safety.

Typical mistakes

  • Jeg må nedlaste appen → Jeg må laste ned appen — in modern usage, the combination laste ned is more common

  • Kan du hjelpe meg å logge inn kontoen? → Kan du hjelpe meg med å logge inn på kontoen? — the preposition på is needed, and after hjelpe meg, med å sounds natural

  • Jeg laster ned den → Jeg laster den ned — the object pronoun usually stands before the particle

  • Jeg må oppdatere ned appen → Jeg må oppdatere appen — oppdatere does not require a particle

  • Husk å bruke en sikkert passord → Husk å bruke et sikkert passord — passord is neuter, so et sikkert

  • Personvernet er viktig å beskytte → Det er viktig å beskytte personvernet sitt — the impersonal construction with Det er viktig sounds more natural

Mini-summary

  • Memorize digital verbs as ready-made combinations: laste ned, logge inn, slå av.

  • With a pronoun, the object usually stands before the particle: laste den ned.

  • After logge inn, the preposition på is usually needed.

  • oppdatere is a regular verb without a particle: oppdatere appen.

  • For the topic of safety, the words passord and personvern are especially useful.
