Lesson 20 of 24

Maintenance and regular servicing

Vocabulary for cleaning, preventive care, and extending the service life of appliances.

Brief review

In the previous lesson, we covered repair, replacement, and contacting a specialist: reparasjon, reservedel, garanti, tekniker, service, å bytte ut, å få reparert, å undersøke feilen. The grammatical support was lexical-communicative: how to describe the need for repair and the decision to repair or replace an appliance. The new lesson continues the topic, but shifts the focus from breakdown to prevention and regular care.

Lesson topic

The topic of the lesson is preventive care for appliances. Here, what matters is not describing a breakdown that has already happened, but explaining what needs to be done regularly so that the appliance works properly for longer.

The new vocabulary is needed for typical household recommendations: cleaning, descaling, replacing a filter, referring to the manual, regularity of action, and the result in the form of a longer service life.

The grammatical support of the lesson is the infinitive after evaluative and advisory expressions: «det er viktig å ...», «det lønner seg å ...». This model is needed because in the topic of maintenance people usually do not give orders, but rather give a neutral recommendation or an evaluation of the usefulness of an action.

It is important to distinguish the meanings of the constructions. «Det er viktig å ...» emphasizes the necessity or importance of an action. «Det lønner seg å ...» means practical benefit: it is sensible to do so because it helps avoid problems, expenses, or wear.

In speech, the topic is usually structured like this: first a general recommendation, then a specific action, then a reason or result. For example: «Det er viktig å avkalke maskinen jevnlig, fordi kalk kan samle seg.» This structure is natural for household advice and explanations.

Lesson goal

  • The student will be able to give recommendations on appliance care.
  • The student will be able to explain what needs to be done regularly for the proper functioning of an appliance.

Examples with analysis

  1. Det er viktig å avkalke maskinen jevnlig. — It is important to descale the machine regularly.. Used as a general rule of care for an appliance that works with water.. First comes the impersonal evaluation «Det er viktig», then the infinitive «å avkalke», then the object «maskinen» and the adverb of frequency «jevnlig».
  2. Det lønner seg å bytte filter i tide. — It is worth replacing the filter in time.. Used when you need to give practical advice and emphasize the benefit of timely action.. The construction «Det lønner seg å» expresses advisability. «i tide» adds the idea of timeliness, that is, before a problem appears.
  3. Fett kan samle seg i vifta. — Grease can build up in the extractor hood.. Used when explaining the reason why an appliance needs to be cleaned regularly.. The modal verb «kan» shows possibility or a typical process. The expression «samle seg», reflexive in meaning, describes the gradual accumulation of a substance in an appliance.
  4. Godt vedlikehold forlenger levetiden. — Good maintenance extends the service life.. Used as a general conclusion about the benefits of regular care.. The subject is the phrase «Godt vedlikehold». The predicate «forlenger» expresses the result. «levetiden» is the specific effect of maintenance.
  5. Det er viktig å avkalke maskinen jevnlig, fordi kalk kan samle seg over tid. — It is important to descale the machine regularly because limescale can build up over time.
New vocabulary: avkalking, jevnlig, å samle seg.
Grammar: det er viktig å + infinitive.
The main clause gives a recommendation in a neutral form, and the subordinate clause with «fordi» explains the reason. This is how natural household advice is structured.
  6. Det lønner seg å bytte filter i tide hvis du vil forlenge levetiden på apparatet. — It is worth replacing the filter in time if you want to extend the service life of the appliance.
    New vocabulary: filterbytte, forlenge levetiden.
Grammar: det lønner seg å + infinitive.
The construction shows the practical benefit of the action. The subordinate clause with «hvis» adds a condition and makes the advice more reasoned.
  7. Bruksanvisningen forklarer hvor ofte rengjøring og avkalking bør gjøres. — The manual explains how often cleaning and descaling should be done.
    New vocabulary: bruksanvisning, rengjøring, avkalking.
Here the new vocabulary is used in an informative statement. The phrase shows that the frequency of maintenance is usually determined not arbitrarily, but by the manual.
  8. Mange venter for lenge, men det er viktig å gjøre filterbytte jevnlig for å unngå dårlig ytelse. — Many wait too long, but it is important to replace the filter regularly in order to avoid poor performance of the appliance.
    New vocabulary: filterbytte, jevnlig.
Grammar: det er viktig å + infinitive.
There is a contrast with «men»: first a typical mistake, then the correct recommendation. The infinitive construction after «for å» expresses purpose.
  9. Fett kan samle seg i vifta når den ikke blir rengjort jevnlig. — Grease can build up in the extractor hood when it is not cleaned regularly.
New vocabulary: å samle seg, jevnlig, rengjøring.
The sentence explains the mechanism of the problem. The subordinate clause with «når» indicates a typical situation, not a one-time event.
  10. Godt vedlikehold forlenger levetiden, selv om apparatet allerede virker i orden. — Good maintenance extends the service life, even if the appliance already seems to be in working order.
    New vocabulary: vedlikehold, forlenge levetiden.
The connector «selv om» shows an important idea of the topic: care is needed not only after a breakdown, but also when the appliance is functioning normally.
  11. Det lønner seg å lese bruksanvisningen før du begynner med avkalking, fordi feil metode kan skade maskinen. — It is worth reading the manual before you start descaling, because the wrong method can damage the machine.
    New vocabulary: bruksanvisning, avkalking.
Grammar: det lønner seg å + infinitive.
First, advice is given, then the time clarification «før», then the reason. This sequence is typical for explaining proper maintenance.
  12. Regelmessig rengjøring tar litt tid, men det lønner seg å gjøre det før smuss samler seg. — Regular cleaning takes a little time, but it is worth doing it before dirt builds up.
New vocabulary: rengjøring, å samle seg.
Grammar: det lønner seg å + infinitive.
The contrast shows that a small effort now prevents a bigger problem later. The pronoun «det» replaces the action already mentioned.
  13. Hvis du følger bruksanvisningen og gjør vedlikehold jevnlig, kan du ofte unngå unødvendig service. — If you follow the manual and carry out maintenance regularly, you can often avoid unnecessary service.
    New vocabulary: bruksanvisning, vedlikehold, jevnlig.
The conditional clause with «hvis» links proper care with a practical result. This is a natural way to explain the benefits of prevention.
  14. Det er viktig å forstå at filterbytte ikke bare er rengjøring; det er også en del av godt vedlikehold. — It is important to understand that replacing the filter is not just cleaning; it is also part of good maintenance.
    New vocabulary: filterbytte, rengjøring, vedlikehold.
Grammar: det er viktig å + infinitive.
The first sentence introduces an evaluation, and the second part clarifies the difference between the concepts. This helps avoid confusing a separate procedure with overall care.

New words and expressions

  • vedlikehold — maintenance, care. A general word for regular care of appliances so that they work properly and last longer. Godt vedlikehold er viktig for kaffemaskinen. — Good maintenance is important for the coffee machine..
  • rengjøring — cleaning. Refers to the process of cleaning an appliance or its parts as part of regular care. Regelmessig rengjøring hindrer problemer. — Regular cleaning prevents problems..
  • avkalking — descaling. Used mainly for appliances in which water is used, for example a coffee machine or kettle. Avkalking bør gjøres jevnlig. — Descaling should be done regularly..
  • filterbytte — filter replacement. Names a specific maintenance procedure in appliances with a filter. Filterbytte er nødvendig fra tid til annen. — Filter replacement is necessary from time to time..
  • bruksanvisning — user manual. Used when it is necessary to clarify how to care for an appliance correctly and how often to do it. Se i bruksanvisningen før du gjør noe. — Look in the manual before you do anything..
  • jevnlig — regularly. An adverb of frequency for care actions that need to be repeated rather than done once. Maskinen må rengjøres jevnlig. — The appliance must be cleaned regularly..
  • forlenge levetiden — extend the service life. Indicates the result of proper care of appliances. God rengjøring kan forlenge levetiden. — Good cleaning can extend the service life..
  • å samle seg — to build up, to accumulate. Used when dirt, grease, dust, or limescale gradually appears inside an appliance or on its parts. Støv kan samle seg i filteret. — Dust can build up in the filter..

Grammar

Infinitive constructions after evaluative and advisory expressions: "det er viktig å", "det lønner seg å".

After impersonal evaluative constructions, the infinitive with «å» is used. The model is simple: «Det er viktig å + infinitive» and «Det lønner seg å + infinitive». The first construction expresses importance, obligation in meaning, or a general norm of care. The second expresses practical advisability: the action is beneficial because it helps avoid problems or extend service life. After these expressions, you can add an object, an adverbial of frequency, and a reason.

Rules and exceptions

  • The form is built like this: «Det er viktig å + infinitive»: «Det er viktig å rengjøre filteret jevnlig.»
  • The form «Det lønner seg å + infinitive» is used for advice when the speaker emphasizes the benefit or reasonableness of the action: «Det lønner seg å lese bruksanvisningen.»
  • After the infinitive, it is natural to place an object and adverbials: «Det er viktig å avkalke maskinen jevnlig.»
  • If you need to explain the reason, a subordinate clause with «fordi» or a consequence is added after the main construction: «..., fordi fett kan samle seg i vifta.»
  • These constructions sound natural in recommendations, instructions, and neutral advice. They are not needed for a direct command; in that case, the imperative form is usually used, but in this lesson the main method is a neutral recommendation.
  • Exception: After «det lønner seg» the infinitive with «å» is mandatory; the form without «å» is incorrect.
  • Exception: «Det lønner seg å ...» is not suitable if the topic is not benefit, but a strict technical prohibition or a mandatory safety rule. In that case, it is more natural to use stronger means, for example «må» in the main clause.

Study text
