Grammar

In this lesson, the definite singular form of nouns is important. It is used when talking about a specific body part: not just “arm,” but “this arm” or “the arm” as a body part in a situation. Nouns with en usually add the ending -en: en arm → armen, en rygg → ryggen, en mage → magen. Nouns with et usually add the ending -et: et bein → beinet, et hjerte → hjertet, et øye → øyet. In the names of body parts in Norwegian, the definite form is very often used: Jeg har vondt i ryggen, Han løfter armen, Legen undersøker øyet.
