Lesson 5 of 18

Home and rooms

Types of housing, rooms, furniture, and simple descriptions of where things are.

Lesson topic

In this lesson, you will learn basic vocabulary about homes and rooms. You will learn how to name types of housing, the main rooms in a home, several pieces of furniture, and how to build simple phrases about where things are. This is an important topic for everyday communication: when you talk about your home, ask for an address, describe an apartment, or explain where something is.

Types of housing

Let us start with the most common words. Try to remember them as ready-made units and say them aloud right away.

  • et hus — дом

  • en leilighet — квартира

  • et rom — комната

  • et hjem — дом, жилище, домашнее пространство

The word et hus more often refers to the building itself, while et hjem refers to home as the place where a person lives and feels comfortable.

Examples:

  • Jeg bor i et hus. — Я живу в доме.

  • Jeg bor i en leilighet. — Я живу в квартире.

  • Dette er hjemmet mitt. — Это мой дом.

Rooms in the home

Now let us look at the names of rooms. This is the foundation for describing an apartment or a house.

  • et kjøkken — кухня

  • et bad — ванная комната

  • et soverom — спальня

  • ei stue — гостиная

  • en gang — прихожая, коридор

Note that nouns in Norwegian have grammatical gender. At the beginner level, it is useful to memorize the word together with its article: et kjøkken, et bad, ei stue.

Examples of simple phrases:

  • Jeg har et kjøkken og et bad. — У меня есть кухня и ванная.

  • Leiligheten har ett soverom. — В квартире одна спальня.

  • Stua er stor. — Гостиная большая.

  • Badet er lite. — Ванная маленькая.

Furniture and household items

To describe rooms, you need to know at least a few words about furniture.

  • et bord — стол

  • en stol — стул

  • en sofa — диван

  • ei seng — кровать

  • et skap — шкаф

  • et vindu — окно

  • ei dør — дверь

Examples:

  • Det står et bord på kjøkkenet. — На кухне стоит стол.

  • Jeg har en sofa i stua. — У меня есть диван в гостиной.

  • Senga er på soverommet. — Кровать находится в спальне.

How to say where something is

In everyday speech, simple location patterns are very useful. At A1 level, a few models are enough.

1. Det er ... — это, имеется, находится

  • Det er et bord i stua. — В гостиной есть стол.

  • Det er to vinduer på kjøkkenet. — На кухне два окна.

2. Jeg har ... — у меня есть

  • Jeg har et lite kjøkken. — У меня маленькая кухня.

  • Jeg har en seng og et skap. — У меня есть кровать и шкаф.

3. ... er i ... — ... находится в ...

  • Sofaen er i stua. — Диван в гостиной.

  • Bordet er på kjøkkenet. — Стол на кухне.

At this stage, you do not need to aim for complex descriptions. The important thing is to learn to build short and clear phrases confidently.

Useful adjectives for describing a home

These words will make your descriptions more vivid.

  • stor — большой

  • liten — маленький

  • lys — светлый

  • mørk — тёмный

  • fin — красивый, приятный

Examples:

  • Leiligheten er liten. — Квартира маленькая.

  • Kjøkkenet er lyst. — Кухня светлая.

  • Stua er fin. — Гостиная уютная, приятная.

A short home description

Now let us combine the vocabulary into a short connected text. This format is useful when you talk about yourself.

Jeg bor i en liten leilighet. Jeg har et kjøkken, et bad, ei stue og et soverom. Det er en sofa i stua. På kjøkkenet står det et bord og to stoler. Soverommet er lite, men fint.

This text is simple, but it already sounds natural. Notice how the same words are repeated in different structures. This helps you remember vocabulary faster.

Useful phrases for real communication

Below are several phrases that often appear in everyday life.

  • Hvor bor du? — Где ты живёшь?

  • Jeg bor i sentrum. — Я живу в центре.

  • Bor du i hus eller leilighet? — Ты живёшь в доме или в квартире?

  • Jeg bor i leilighet. — Я живу в квартире.

  • Hvor er badet? — Где ванная?

  • Badet er der. — Ванная там.

What is important to remember

After this lesson, it is useful to confidently recognize and use the words et hus, en leilighet, et kjøkken, et bad, et soverom, ei stue, as well as several furniture words. It is also important to master three simple patterns: Jeg bor i ..., Jeg har ..., and Det er .... These will help you talk about your home simply and clearly.

In the next lesson on shopping and everyday life, this vocabulary will be useful for more practical household situations, when you need to describe spaces, objects, and daily actions at home.
