Brief review
In the previous lesson, basic rules of electrical safety at home were covered: risk, danger, grounding, wet hands, fire risk, and disconnecting the power. The grammatical support is already familiar: prohibition with "ikke", as well as necessity and recommendation with modal constructions. In this lesson, the same type of everyday messages is transferred to short labels and instructions on the appliances themselves.
Lesson topic
The topic of the lesson is short formulations that appear on the body of an appliance, on a label, in a short instruction, and in warnings before use. These are not conversational phrases, but concise functional language.
The new vocabulary shows typical actions and restrictions: what needs to be read, what must not be covered, where the appliance may be used, when it needs to be allowed to cool down, and what load must not be exceeded.
For this topic, it is important not to translate every word literally, but to understand the function of the phrase. For example, "før bruk" and "etter bruk" indicate the time of the action, while "kun til innendørs bruk" limits the area of use of the appliance.
In speaking, the student needs to be able not only to recognize such a formulation, but also to retell its meaning in their own words: what exactly needs to be done, when to do it, and what restriction applies.
Lesson goal
- The student will be able to understand short instructions and warnings on household appliances.
- The student will be able to retell the meaning of an instruction in their own words.
Examples with analysis
- Les advarselen før bruk. — Read the warning before use.. A phrase for a label, instruction, or spoken reminder before starting to use the appliance.. The imperative form "Les" is used for a direct instruction to act. "advarselen" is in the definite form because it refers to a specific warning that the user sees. "før bruk" indicates the moment when the action is required.
- Apparatet er kun til innendørs bruk. — The appliance is for indoor use only.. A formulation on the appliance body, packaging, or in the technical description when the place of use needs to be restricted.. "Apparatet" is in the definite form because a specific appliance is meant. The linking verb "er" introduces a characteristic. The expression "kun til innendørs bruk" is a standard functional formula of restriction.
- Ikke dekk til ventilasjonen. — Do not cover the ventilation.. A prohibition on a label or in instructions if the appliance needs free airflow.. "Ikke" is placed before the imperative form and creates a prohibition. "ventilasjonen" is in the definite form because it refers to the specific ventilation of this appliance.
- La ovnen avkjøles etter bruk. — Let the oven cool down after use.. An instruction after using a heating appliance, before touching, cleaning, or putting it away.. The construction "la ... avkjøles" expresses allowing a process: the point is not to do the action yourself, but to let the appliance cool down. "etter bruk" indicates exactly when this is required.
- Les advarselen før bruk, fordi apparatet kan bli svært varmt. — Read the warning before use because the appliance can become very hot.
New vocabulary: advarsel, før bruk.
Grammar: Imperative form; cause-and-effect relation with "fordi".
The first part gives a direct instruction, and the second explains the reason. This structure is typical of clear household warnings: first the action, then the reason for it. - Hvis du ser ordet «advarsel», bør du lese resten av teksten nøye. — If you see the word “warning,” you should read the rest of the text carefully.
New vocabulary: advarsel.
Grammar: Conditional sentence with "hvis"; modal verb as familiar support.
This shows how the user interprets the marking. "advarsel" serves as a signal after which important information is expected. - Vær forsiktig når du flytter apparatet. Det kan være tyngre enn det ser ut. — Be careful when moving the appliance. It may be heavier than it looks.
New vocabulary: forsiktig.
Grammar: Imperative form; time clause with "når"; comparison.
This is a mini-situation in two sentences. First comes a short instruction, then a clarification of the risk. This is how instructions explain not only what to do, but also why. - På etiketten står det «forsiktig», selv om apparatet virker enkelt å bruke. — The label says “careful,” even though the appliance seems easy to use.
New vocabulary: forsiktig.
Grammar: Contrast with "selv om".
This phrase shows an important boundary of usage: even a simple appliance may require caution. Here, "forsiktig" is not a description of the object, but a warning signal. - Maksimal belastning er 1500 watt, derfor må du ikke koble til for mange apparater samtidig. — The maximum load is 1500 watts, therefore you must not connect too many appliances at the same time.
New vocabulary: maksimal belastning.
Grammar: Result with "derfor"; prohibition as familiar support.
First, the technical limit is stated, then the practical consequence. This is how the user connects a numerical restriction with a real action. - Hvis den maksimale belastningen overskrides, kan ledningen bli varm. — If the maximum load is exceeded, the cord can become hot.
New vocabulary: maksimal belastning.
Grammar: Conditional sentence with "hvis".
Here the expression is embedded in a warning about a consequence. This is a natural way to retell the meaning of a technical label in your own words. - Apparatet er kun til innendørs bruk, så det bør ikke stå på balkongen. — The appliance is for indoor use only, so it should not be kept on the balcony.
New vocabulary: kun til innendørs bruk.
Grammar: Result with "så"; modal recommendation as familiar support.
This phrase shows a practical interpretation of the restriction. It is not enough to understand the formula; you need to derive a specific rule of behavior from it. - Mange ignorerer teksten «kun til innendørs bruk», men den er viktig når det er fuktig eller kaldt. — Many people ignore the text “for indoor use only,” but it is important when it is damp or cold.
New vocabulary: kun til innendørs bruk.
Grammar: Contrast with "men"; time/condition clause with "når".
The example shows that the formula limits not only the place, but also the operating conditions. This is a typical household warning. - Ikke dekk til ventilasjonen, fordi varm luft må kunne slippe ut. — Do not cover the ventilation, because hot air must be able to escape.
New vocabulary: ikke dekk til.
Grammar: Prohibition with "ikke"; cause-and-effect relation with "fordi".
The prohibition is explained functionally: ventilation is needed to remove heat. This kind of reason clause helps to understand the meaning rather than memorize the phrase mechanically. - Hvis du dekker til apparatet, kan det bli for varmt og slå seg av. — If you cover the appliance, it can become too hot and switch itself off.
New vocabulary: ikke dekk til.
Grammar: Conditional sentence with "hvis"; result.
This is a retelling of the same warning without the imperative. It is useful for developing the ability to explain an instruction in your own words. - La ovnen avkjøles etter bruk før du rengjør den. — Let the oven cool down after use before cleaning it.
New vocabulary: la avkjøles, etter bruk.
Grammar: Imperative form; sequence in time.
The order of actions is important here: first the end of use, then cooling down, then cleaning. That is why "etter bruk" and the following action stand in one sequence. - Noen vil rengjøre ovnen med en gang, men det er tryggere å la den avkjøles først. — Some people want to clean the oven right away, but it is safer to let it cool down first.
New vocabulary: la avkjøles.
Grammar: Contrast with "men"; infinitive construction as familiar support.
The example shows a natural everyday comment on the instruction. The expression "la den avkjøles" conveys not an active action, but waiting for the necessary state. - Før bruk bør du kontrollere at apparatet står stabilt og tørt. — Before use, you should check that the appliance is standing stably and in a dry place.
New vocabulary: før bruk.
Grammar: Adverbial of time; modal recommendation as familiar support.
"før bruk" is convenient to place at the beginning if you need to indicate the time for carrying out the instruction right away. This is typical of short guides. - Etter bruk er det lurt å lese om apparatet må rengjøres med en gang eller senere. — After use, it is a good idea to read whether the appliance needs to be cleaned right away or later.
New vocabulary: etter bruk.
Grammar: Adverbial of time; indirect question.
This phrase shows that "etter bruk" does not always mean the same action. It only indicates the stage, while the specific requirement depends on the instruction.

Study text
