Lesson 16 of 24

Description of the functions and purpose of the appliance

How to explain what an appliance is for and what it allows you to do.

Brief review

In the previous lesson, we looked at everyday evaluations of an appliance: convenience, noise, size, maintenance. Key vocabulary: brukervennlig, støynivå, plassbesparende, tungvint, lett å rengjøre, tar mye plass, praktisk, upraktisk. Grammatical support: degrees of comparison are already familiar and can be used to compare models, but here the new task is different — not to evaluate an appliance, but to name its function and purpose precisely.

Lesson topic

The topic of the lesson is how to describe the purpose of an appliance through its function. At the B1 level, it is not enough to name the object. You need to be able to explain what it is needed for and what result it gives.

This lesson uses three main function constructions: "brukes til", "er beregnet på" and "gjør det mulig å". They are not completely equivalent and are chosen according to meaning.

"brukes til" names a practical use: what is usually done with the appliance. This is a neutral and the most frequent model for everyday description.

"er beregnet på" indicates the purpose or intended area of use. This construction sounds more formal and is often found in product descriptions, instructions and specifications.

"gjør det mulig å" shows not the direct action of the appliance, but the possibility or result that it gives the user. This model is needed when it is important to emphasize convenience, speed or accessibility of the action.

Additional expressions "er laget for", "forenkler", "spare tid", "daglig bruk", "ved behov" help clarify for whom or for what the appliance is created, what practical effect it gives and how often it is used.

The boundary of usage is important. If you need to say that an appliance performs a specific function, it is natural to choose "brukes til". If you need to emphasize that a model is designed for a certain type of use, "er beregnet på" is better. If the focus is on the result for the user, "gjør det mulig å" is more precise.

In speech on the topic of household appliances, these constructions are often combined: first the purpose of the appliance is named, then its practical benefit. This makes the description precise rather than general.

Lesson goal

  • The student will be able to explain the purpose of an appliance through its function.
  • The student will be able to build precise phrases about what an appliance allows or helps one to do.

Examples with analysis

  1. Denne maskinen brukes til å tørke klær. — This machine is used to dry clothes.. A neutral everyday description of the function of an appliance when you need to directly name what it does.. The subject is "Denne maskinen". Then comes the function construction "brukes til" and the infinitive "å tørke". This model answers the question of what the appliance is for.
  2. Apparatet er beregnet på daglig bruk. — The appliance is intended for daily use.. Suitable for describing the purpose of a model, especially in specifications, a review or instructions.. After "er beregnet på" there is the noun phrase "daglig bruk", not an infinitive. Here what matters is not the operation, but the type of use.
  3. Det gjør det mulig å lage mat raskere. — This makes it possible to cook food faster.. Used when you need to emphasize the practical result of the function, for example speed or convenience.. The formal subject "Det" refers to the appliance, function or solution. The construction "gjør det mulig å" requires the infinitive "å lage".
  4. Løsningen forenkler rengjøringen betydelig. — This solution significantly simplifies cleaning.. Suitable for describing the useful effect of a function or the design of an appliance.. Here the verb "forenkler" is used because the focus is not on purpose, but on the practical simplification of the action. The adverb "betydelig" strengthens the result.
  5. Denne maskinen brukes til å tørke klær. — This machine is used to dry clothes.
    New vocabulary: brukes til.
    Grammar: "brukes til" + "å" + infinitive.
This is the basic model for directly describing a function. After the construction comes an action in the infinitive, because you need to name what exactly is done with the help of the appliance.
  6. Apparatet er beregnet på daglig bruk, så det passer godt for en stor familie. — The appliance is intended for daily use, so it is well suited for a large family.
New vocabulary: er beregnet på, daglig bruk.
Grammar: "er beregnet på" + noun phrase.
Here what matters is not the action, but the mode of use. Therefore, after "er beregnet på" there is not a verb, but the phrase "daglig bruk".
  7. Denne løsningen gjør det mulig å varme opp maten raskere når man har dårlig tid. — This solution makes it possible to heat up food faster when one is short of time.
New vocabulary: gjør det mulig å.
Grammar: "gjør det mulig å" + infinitive.
The construction shows the result for the user: the possibility appears to do the action faster. The subordinate clause with "når" adds a typical everyday situation.
  8. Modellen er laget for små kjøkken, fordi den tar mindre plass enn vanlige apparater. — This model is made for small kitchens because it takes up less space than ordinary appliances.
    New vocabulary: er laget for.
Grammar: "er laget for" + noun phrase.
Here the design idea of the model and its target environment of use are emphasized. This is not just a function, but suitability for specific conditions.
  9. Den forenkler rengjøringen betydelig, selv om filteret fortsatt må tømmes regelmessig. — It significantly simplifies cleaning, although the filter still has to be emptied regularly.
    New vocabulary: forenkler.
Grammar: Lexical model of result without separate new grammar.
The verb "forenkler" shows a practical effect. The subordinate clause with "selv om" introduces a limitation: the appliance helps, but does not eliminate all user actions.
  10. En slik maskin brukes til å spare tid i hverdagen, ikke bare til å gjøre arbeidet lettere. — Such a machine is used to save time in everyday life, not only to make the work easier.
New vocabulary: brukes til, spare tid.
    Grammar: "brukes til" + "å" + infinitive.
After "brukes til" you can name not only a physical action, but also a practical purpose. The contrast "ikke bare ..." clarifies the benefit of the appliance.
  11. Produktet er beregnet på daglig bruk, men det kan også brukes ved behov hvis man ikke vil ha det stående fremme hele tiden. — The product is intended for daily use, but it can also be used when needed if you do not want to keep it standing out all the time.
New vocabulary: er beregnet på, daglig bruk, ved behov.
Grammar: "er beregnet på" + noun phrase; familiar modal verb.
The first part speaks about the typical purpose, the second about the actual mode of use. "Ved behov" limits the frequency: not constantly, but depending on the situation.
  12. Denne funksjonen gjør det mulig å bruke mindre tid på matlaging, derfor er apparatet praktisk i hverdagen. — This function makes it possible to spend less time on cooking, therefore the appliance is practical in everyday life.
New vocabulary: gjør det mulig å.
Grammar: "gjør det mulig å" + infinitive.
Here it is not the appliance itself that is described, but its function. The construction is chosen because the focus is on the result — saving time.
  13. Maskinen er laget for daglig bruk, men den fungerer også godt ved behov i mindre husholdninger. — The machine is made for daily use, but it also works well when needed in smaller households.
New vocabulary: er laget for, daglig bruk, ved behov.
Grammar: "er laget for" + noun phrase.
First the main purpose is indicated, then an additional usage scenario. This is a typical B1 way to clarify the limits of use.
  14. Løsningen forenkler arbeidet og gjør det mulig å spare tid, selv om den ikke er nødvendig hver dag. — The solution simplifies the work and makes it possible to save time, although it is not necessary every day.
New vocabulary: forenkler, gjør det mulig å, spare tid.
Grammar: Combination of "forenkler" and "gjør det mulig å".
In one sentence, two types of meaning are combined: direct effect and result for the user. This is natural when you need to give a more precise description of the benefit of an appliance.
  15. Denne maskinen brukes til å spare tid når man lager mat. — This machine is used to save time when cooking.
    New vocabulary: spare tid.
    Grammar: "brukes til" + "å" + infinitive.
Here "spare tid" is framed as an action after "brukes til". The construction shows the practical purpose of using the appliance.
  16. Den nye løsningen hjelper familien å spare tid om morgenen. — The new solution helps the family save time in the morning.
    New vocabulary: spare tid.
The expression "spare tid" names the everyday benefit of the appliance. The focus here is not on the technical function, but on the result for the user.

New words and expressions

  • er beregnet på — intended for; designed for. Used to indicate the intended purpose, type of use or category of user. Suitable for a more formal description of an appliance or solution. Apparatet er beregnet på daglig bruk. — The appliance is intended for daily use..
  • brukes til — used for. The main neutral construction when you need to name the function of an appliance or the action performed with its help. Denne maskinen brukes til å tørke klær. — This machine is used to dry clothes..
  • gjør det mulig å — allows; makes it possible. Needed when what matters is not the appliance itself, but the possibility or result that it gives the user. Det gjør det mulig å lage mat raskere. — This makes it possible to cook food faster..
  • er laget for — made for; created for. Indicates the design idea, intended purpose or type of user. Often close to "er beregnet på", but sounds less technical. Denne modellen er laget for små kjøkken. — This model is made for small kitchens..
  • forenkler — simplifies. Shows the practical effect of an appliance or solution: the action becomes easier, faster or clearer. Løsningen forenkler rengjøringen betydelig. — This solution significantly simplifies cleaning..
  • spare tid — save time. Used to describe the benefit of an appliance in everyday life. Often comes after constructions of function or result. Maskinen hjelper oss å spare tid i hverdagen. — The machine helps us save time in everyday life..
  • daglig bruk — daily use. Clarifies the frequency and type of normal use of an appliance. Produktet passer godt til daglig bruk. — The product is well suited for daily use..
  • ved behov — when needed. Shows that the appliance or function is not used constantly, but at the necessary moment. Den kan brukes ved behov. — It can be used when needed..

Additional new vocabulary

  • spare tid — save time. Denne løsningen hjelper oss å spare tid i hverdagen. — This solution helps us save time in everyday life.

Grammar

Constructions of purpose and function: "brukes til", "er beregnet på", "gjør det mulig å".

In this lesson, grammar is subordinate to one task: to name the function of an appliance precisely. All three constructions require different continuations. After "brukes til" an infinitive with "å" is usually used if an action is named: "brukes til å tørke klær". After "er beregnet på" there is more often a noun or phrase: "er beregnet på daglig bruk". After "gjør det mulig å" an infinitive with "å" is obligatory, because it is about an action that becomes possible: "gjør det mulig å lage mat raskere". These models cannot be mixed mechanically, because they express different relations: function, purpose and result.

Rules and exceptions

  • "brukes til" + "å" + infinitive, if an action is named after the construction: "brukes til å tørke klær".
  • "er beregnet på" + noun or noun phrase, if you need to indicate the purpose or type of use: "er beregnet på daglig bruk".
  • "gjør det mulig å" + infinitive, if you need to show the possibility or result for the user: "gjør det mulig å lage mat raskere".
  • If the subject is the appliance itself, it is natural to describe it through "brukes til" or "er beregnet på". If the subject is a solution, function or technology, "gjør det mulig å" or "forenkler" is often natural.
  • In a neutral everyday description, the appliance is named first, then the function or purpose. This order makes the phrase clear and typical of Norwegian descriptive style.
  • Exception: After "er beregnet på" a verbal meaning is sometimes possible through a verbal noun rather than through an infinitive: "er beregnet på oppvarming" is natural, but in everyday speech it is often simpler and clearer to choose "brukes til å varme opp".
  • Exception: "er laget for" can replace "er beregnet på" when the focus is on the design idea or target group rather than on the technical purpose. They are not fully interchangeable: "er beregnet på" is usually more formal.
  • Exception: "gjør det mulig å" does not name the direct function of an appliance as precisely as "brukes til". The phrase "En tørketrommel gjør det mulig å tørke klær" is grammatically possible, but in a direct description of purpose, "brukes til å tørke klær" is more natural.

Study text
