Weather in everyday speech
In this lesson, we begin a topic that appears very often in ordinary conversation. Weather is one of the most natural ways to start a conversation, keep it going, or briefly describe the day. At A1 level, it is important to learn the most common words and build simple phrases about what is happening now.
In Norwegian, weather is often described with an impersonal construction using the word det. This is a formal subject that is useful to remember as part of a fixed pattern. That is why many weather phrases begin in the same way.
Main patterns:
Det er sol. — sunny.
Det regner. — it is raining.
Det snør. — it is snowing.
Det blåser. — it is windy.
Det er kaldt. — it is cold.
Det er varmt. — it is warm or hot.
Basic vocabulary for the topic
Below is core vocabulary that is useful to recognize and use in short descriptions.
sol — sun
regn — rain
snø — snow
vind — wind
sky — cloud
vær — weather
sola / solen — the sun in definite form
regnvær — rainy weather
snøvær — snowy weather
Some adjectives are also useful:
solrik — sunny
vindfull — windy
kald — cold
varm — warm, hot
våt — wet
tørr — dry
At the beginner stage, you do not need to use all the words at once. It is enough to understand and say the most common phrases confidently.
How to say what the weather is like now
To describe the current weather, very short sentences are most often used. They are convenient in conversation and easy to remember.
Det er fint vær. — the weather is nice.
Det er dårlig vær. — the weather is bad.
Det er sol i dag. — it is sunny today.
Det er varmt i dag. — it is warm today.
Det er kaldt i dag. — it is cold today.
Det regner i dag. — it is raining today.
Det snør i dag. — it is snowing today.
Det blåser mye i dag. — it is very windy today.
Det er overskyet. — it is cloudy or overcast.
Notice the word i dag, meaning “today.” It often makes the phrase more specific.
How to talk about typical weather
Besides talking about the weather right now, everyday speech often includes what the weather is usually like: in a city, in a country, or in a certain season. Simple present-tense sentences work well for this.
Det regner ofte. — it often rains.
Det snør om vinteren. — it snows in winter.
Det er varmt om sommeren. — it is warm in summer.
Det er kaldt om vinteren. — it is cold in winter.
Det blåser mye her. — it is often windy here.
Været er fint i dag. — the weather is nice today.
Words like ofte (“often”), om vinteren (“in winter”), om sommeren (“in summer”), and her (“here”) make speech more natural.
Questions about the weather
To keep a simple conversation going, it is important not only to describe the weather but also to ask basic questions.

Hvordan er været i dag? — What is the weather like today?
Er det kaldt ute? — Is it cold outside?

The word ute means “outside” and is very common in everyday speech.
