Lesson 7 of 24

Dishwasher

Vocabulary for loading, programs, and typical washing results.

Brief review

In the previous lesson, we covered the washing machine and drying: the names of settings, the work cycle, and the user’s actions. From the vocabulary, words on the topic of household appliances and settings are already familiar, including vaskemaskin, tørketrommel, vaskeprogram, skyllemiddel, vaskemiddel. The grammatical support is also already known: the modal verbs må, bør, kan for necessity, advice, and possibility.

Lesson topic

The topic of the lesson is how to describe the use of a dishwasher in an everyday situation: what and where people load, which program they choose, what they do before and after washing, and what result they got.

The new vocabulary is limited to eight items. This is enough to describe a basic cycle: load the machine, arrange items by zones, add detergent, choose a short rinse program, and then unload the machine.

In this topic, it is important to distinguish between parts of the machine and actions. The words bestikkurv, øverste hylle and nedre kurv name a place inside the machine. The words å fylle opp and å tømme name the user’s action. The word oppvasktablett refers to the detergent, and skylleprogram is a specific type of program.

At the B1 level, it is not enough just to name an object, but to connect the action with a reason or result: why people choose skylleprogram, why it is necessary to tømme maskinen, what happened after the wash. Therefore, the examples use causal and conditional links, but without a separate new grammar topic.

The lesson expressions are natural in everyday speech when a person reports the state of the machine, explains the order of actions, or complains about the washing result. For this, precise nouns and verbs are needed, rather than general words like “wash” or “put” without clarification.

Lesson goal

  • The student will be able to describe the use of a dishwasher.
  • The student will be able to report a typical problem after washing.

Examples with analysis

  1. Oppvaskmaskinen er full. — The dishwasher is full.. used when you need to report the state of the machine before starting it or before unloading it. The subject is oppvaskmaskinen, the predicate is er, the predicative is full. This is a brief statement about the state, without indicating the reason.
  2. Jeg må tømme den nedre kurven. — I need to empty the lower rack.. used after washing, when talking about a specific action by the user. The modal verb må shows necessity. After it comes the infinitive tømme without a particle. The phrase den nedre kurven points to a specific lower rack.
  3. Vi bruker skylleprogrammet først. — We use the rinse program first.. used when explaining the order of actions if the full wash is started later. The verb bruker stands in second position, as in a normal declarative sentence. The word først sets the sequence of actions.
  4. Glassene ble ikke helt rene. — The glasses did not become completely clean.. used when reporting the washing result and pointing out a problem. The form ble shows a change of state after the washing process. The negation ikke stands before the adverb helt, and rene agrees with the plural glassene.
  5. Oppvaskmaskinen er full, så vi kan ikke sette inn flere tallerkener. — The dishwasher is full, so we cannot put in more plates.
    New vocabulary: oppvaskmaskin.
Grammar: Known support: kan for possibility; result connection with så.
First, the state of the machine is reported, then the consequence. This makes the phrase sound natural: the reason is already clear from the word full.
  6. Jeg må tømme den nedre kurven først, fordi vi trenger tallerkenene til middag. — I need to empty the lower rack first because we need the plates for dinner.
New vocabulary: nedre kurv, å tømme.
Grammar: Known support: må for necessity; reason clause with fordi.
The main action is placed at the beginning, then the reason is added. The word først clarifies the order, and den nedre kurven points to a specific part of the machine.
  7. Bestikket bør stå i bestikkurven, ellers blir det vanskelig å tømme maskinen raskt. — The cutlery should be in the cutlery basket, otherwise it will be difficult to empty the machine quickly.
    New vocabulary: bestikkurv, å tømme.
Grammar: Known support: bør for recommendation; condition/result connection with ellers.
The phrase does not just name the place, but explains the practical reason. This is typical for B1: the vocabulary is used in a functional context.
  8. Glassene står på øverste hylle, mens de store tallerkenene står i nedre kurv. — The glasses are on the upper shelf, while the large plates are in the lower rack.
New vocabulary: øverste hylle, nedre kurv.
    Grammar: Contrast with mens.
What matters here is the contrast between two zones of the machine. The construction with mens helps compare the placement of different items without unnecessary repetition.
  9. Vi bruker skylleprogrammet først når maskinen ikke er helt full. — We use the rinse program first when the machine is not completely full.
    New vocabulary: skylleprogram.
    Grammar: Temporal/conditional clause with når.
The phrase shows a typical everyday situation: the full wash is postponed. Skylleprogrammet is used in the definite form because it refers to a specific program.
  10. Hvis du bare skal skylle koppene, er skylleprogrammet nok. — If you only need to rinse the cups, the rinse program is enough.
    New vocabulary: skylleprogram.
    Grammar: Conditional clause with hvis.
Here the word skylleprogram is connected with the task, not just named. The brief evaluation nok shows sufficiency in a specific situation.
  11. Jeg fylte opp oppvaskmaskinen i går kveld, men jeg glemte oppvasktabletten. — I loaded the dishwasher last night, but I forgot the dishwasher tablet.
New vocabulary: å fylle opp, oppvaskmaskin, oppvasktablett.
    Grammar: Contrast with men.
First, the completed action is named, then the mistake. This is a natural way to describe the reason for a poor washing result.
  12. Uten oppvasktablett blir ikke koppene ordentlig rene, selv om programmet er langt. — Without a dishwasher tablet, the cups do not become properly clean, even though the program is long.
    New vocabulary: oppvasktablett.
    Grammar: Contrast with selv om.
The phrase shows a limitation: a long program does not solve the problem if there is no detergent. This is more important than simply naming the object.
  13. Etter middagen pleier vi å fylle opp maskinen med en gang, derfor slipper vi å gjøre alt senere. — After dinner, we usually load the machine right away, so we do not have to do everything later.
    New vocabulary: å fylle opp.
    Grammar: Result connection with derfor.
Here the action is presented as a habit. Derfor connects the regular action with a convenient consequence.
  14. Glassene ble ikke helt rene, så jeg må sjekke om de sto for tett på øverste hylle. — The glasses did not become completely clean, so I need to check whether they were standing too close together on the upper shelf.
    New vocabulary: øverste hylle.
Grammar: Known support: må; result connection with så; indirect question with om.
The phrase is built from the result to checking the cause. Øverste hylle is used not in isolation, but as part of the explanation of the problem.

Study text

Questions for self-check

  1. Why is skylleprogrammet used first in the text instead of starting the full wash cycle right away?
  2. How do bestikkurv, øverste hylle, and nedre kurv differ in function in the dishwasher?
  3. How would you explain in Norwegian that the machine is already full, but after washing the glasses were still not completely clean?
