Lesson 5 of 24

Refrigerator and freezer

Vocabulary for food storage, temperature zones, and typical cooling problems.

Brief review

In the previous lesson, we looked at small everyday appliances: their names, purposes, and common household actions. From that vocabulary, you already know, for example, words for describing how an appliance works and basic actions with equipment. As grammatical support, you already know the difference between "å fungere" and "å virke" in everyday descriptions of an appliance’s condition and operation. In this lesson, you can only build on that material, but the new topic is food storage and cooling.

Lesson topic

The topic of the lesson is the names of the main parts of the refrigerator and freezer, as well as verbs for describing their function and typical problems. This is needed not for abstract descriptions of appliances, but for specific everyday situations: to say where food is kept, what needs to be done with the appliance, and what exactly is not working properly.

The new vocabulary is divided into three groups. The first is the appliances and their parts: "kjøleskap", "fryser", "hyller", "grønnsaksskuff". The second is storage parameters: "temperatur". The third is actions: "å kjøle ned", "å fryse", "å tine". This set makes it possible not just to name an object, but to describe its function and a problem.

At the B1 level, it is important to speak not in isolated words, but in short connected messages: what the appliance does, what it does not do, why this is a problem, and what needs to be done. That is why the examples use causal and conditional links, but without introducing a separate new grammar topic.

Pay attention to the boundary of usage. "Kjøleskap" and "fryser" are appliances, while "å kjøle ned" and "å fryse" are actions. One cannot replace the other: first the object is named, then its function or problem. This makes speech precise and natural.

Lesson goal

  • The student will be able to describe the functions of a refrigerator and a freezer.
  • The student will be able to report a typical cooling problem.

Examples with analysis

  1. Kjøleskapet kjøler ikke nok. — The refrigerator does not cool enough.. used when the appliance is working, but the result is weak: the food is not cold enough. The subject is "Kjøleskapet", the predicate is "kjøler", the negation "ikke" comes after the finite verb, and "nok" specifies the degree: not enough.
  2. Vi må tine fryseren. — We need to defrost the freezer.. used when ice has built up in the freezer or it works worse because of frost. "Vi må" expresses necessity. After the modal verb, the infinitive "tine" is used without a particle. "Fryseren" is in the definite form because it refers to a specific freezer at home.
  3. Temperaturen er for høy. — The temperature is too high.. used when assessing the condition of a refrigerator or freezer when the cooling is insufficient. This is a copular construction with "er". "For høy" means above the norm, not just neutrally high.
  4. Grønnsaksskuffen er full. — The vegetable drawer is full.. used when you need to say that there is no more space or almost no space in the compartment. The definite form "Grønnsaksskuffen" points to a specific drawer in this refrigerator. The short predicate "er full" describes a state, not an action.
  5. Kjøleskapet kjøler ikke nok, så melken blir ikke kald nok. — The refrigerator does not cool enough, so the milk does not get cold enough.
New vocabulary: kjøleskap, å kjøle ned.
Grammar: present tense, negation, result with "så".
First, the appliance problem is named, then its everyday consequence. The verb "kjøler" describes the function of the appliance, not a one-time action.
  6. Hvis temperaturen er for høy, må vi sjekke maten med en gang. — If the temperature is too high, we need to check the food right away.
    New vocabulary: temperatur.
Grammar: condition with "hvis", modal construction.
The conditional part sets the criterion for evaluation, after which the necessary action follows. This is a natural way to talk about an everyday problem at B1.
  7. Vi må tine fryseren, fordi det er for mye is inni. — We need to defrost the freezer because there is too much ice inside.
    New vocabulary: fryser, å tine.
Grammar: reason with "fordi", modal construction.
The phrase is built from action to reason: first the necessity, then the explanation. This is a typical model of an everyday message.
  8. Jeg legger grønnsakene i grønnsaksskuffen når jeg vil at de skal holde seg friske lenger. — I put the vegetables in the vegetable drawer when I want them to stay fresh longer.
    New vocabulary: grønnsaksskuff.
Grammar: temporal clause with "når", purpose/desire clause.
The example shows not only the name of a part of the refrigerator, but also its function. This helps the word stick in a natural context.
  9. Det er flere hyller i kjøleskapet, men vi bruker de nederste til store bokser. — There are several shelves in the refrigerator, but we use the lower ones for large containers.
    New vocabulary: hyller, kjøleskap.
    Grammar: contrast with "men".
First, a neutral description of the appliance is given, then its practical use is specified. This is more useful than naming the item in isolation.
  10. Fryseren fryser maten raskt, selv om den er ganske full. — The freezer freezes food quickly, even though it is quite full.
    New vocabulary: fryser, å fryse.
    Grammar: contrast with "selv om".
Here it is important to distinguish between the appliance "fryseren" and the action "fryser". The identical written form requires attention to the function of the word in the sentence.
  11. Når vi kommer hjem med mye mat, bruker vi fryseren for å fryse det vi ikke skal spise denne uken. — When we come home with a lot of food, we use the freezer to freeze what we are not going to eat this week.
    New vocabulary: fryser, å fryse.
Grammar: temporal clause with "når", purpose with "for å".
The example shows a typical everyday situation and links the appliance with its function. This is a natural B1 model with a storage-related reason.
  12. Grønnsaksskuffen er full, derfor må vi flytte noe til en annen hylle. — The vegetable drawer is full, so we need to move something to another shelf.
    New vocabulary: grønnsaksskuff, hyller.
Grammar: result with "derfor", modal construction.
First, the state is described, then the practical solution. "Derfor" makes the cause-and-effect link explicit.
  13. Temperaturen i fryseren virker stabil, men i kjøleskapet er den litt for høy. — The temperature in the freezer seems stable, but in the refrigerator it is a little too high.
    New vocabulary: temperatur, fryser, kjøleskap.
Grammar: comparison of two objects, contrast with "men".
Here it is acceptable to rely on the already known verb "virker" without a new explanation. The main focus remains on the new vocabulary of the topic.
  14. Hvis kjøleskapet ikke kjøler ned drikkene raskt nok, setter vi dem inn tidligere enn vanlig. — If the refrigerator does not cool the drinks quickly enough, we put them in earlier than usual.
New vocabulary: kjøleskap, å kjøle ned.
Grammar: condition with "hvis", negation, comparative adverbial.
The phrase shows how to describe not a breakdown, but insufficient efficiency. This is an important everyday nuance: the appliance may work, but not well enough.

Study text

Questions for self-check

  1. What problem did they notice at home, and which appliance did it concern?
  2. How do the words "å kjøle ned", "å fryse" and "å tine" differ in function within the topic of this lesson?
  3. How would you explain in Norwegian that the food needs to be moved if the vegetable drawer is already full?
