Grammar

In this lesson, the word order in a main clause is important when a time expression comes first. In Norwegian, the verb usually comes immediately after the first element. Therefore, in sentences with i dag, først, deretter, the verb is placed before the subject: I dag begynner jeg klokka sju, and not the form with the subject before the verb. The same rule also works with a modal verb: Først skal vi mate dyrene. If the sentence does not begin with a time expression, the word order is the usual one: first the subject, then the verb.
